I think with wow, the main thing that madeit successful is it was so Mainstream, like with DBO most if not all of it's player base will be DBZ fans, where with wow, a good storyline, combined with an Easy to learn UI made it very successful, even up to the highend the game was challenging, but when they released WOTLK it became too easy, and they made it carebear friendly, and now alot of people are leaving it because newbie 80 can easymode get some of the hardgear and the so called "hardmodes" in PVE arent hard enough, or are nearly impossible.
A Revamp back to burning crusade or an Expansion are the only two things i see that is going to do WoW any good.

I think what made WoW successful was that it was probably the first MMO where you could do quests all the way up to the maximum level and didn't force you to sit there with a group of people and grind for months (it's not just that, but I think that's a big part of it). I don't remember any other game before it that used that style of leveling and it's what kept me playing WoW. Blizzard knows that the game starts at the max level and isn't going to force you to go through too much of a grindfest to get there.
Thankfully DBO seems to be copying this strategy, and apparently this Aion game isn't.

The thing with AION is that it -is- at the end of the day an eastern game, most of which have been steriotyped as "grinders", dispite the tweaking of AION for the west the amount of quests from what I've heard from friend who are currently trying it out is a bit low.
Hell I dont know if anyone else here has played Age of Conan, but that is a typical example of a badly designed game.
The quest base was too far stretched-out, You'd have 1-40 covered in Lore and quests, but then at 50 they almost completely disappeared. Funcom (it's developer company) even introduced a system of daily quests to patch up what they've missed. Thats not the bad part either From levels 71-80 ( 80 being max ) You have to grind, It takes maybe 2 weeks as well. I think it's this that culled most of it's play base.
Good game though! lols, (apart from leveling) :p
Good to hear DBO hasnt got that problem, thats why carrying out beta and development is important, Paying attention to players in each session of leveling is essential and I'll be waiting to see what else they've done.

I wasn't impressed with it. Then again, everyone I knew built it up like it was the best MMO out there.
I hear its infested with bots and gold spammers now. Glad I never payed for it if that's the case.
I'll stick with Wow for now.
