Gohan was forced to enter the tournament by Videl(he was blackmailed, he can't "agree" because he doesn't have a choice in the matter without screwing himself). He would have entered whether Goku was gonna be there or not. Goku coming back for 1 day was merely a coincidence.
IMO, All the characters have an annoying side about them.
Goku- Gives everyone the benefit of the doubt and a fair chance (eg gives cell a sensu bean)
Vegeta - Too snobish
Trunks - Wants to prove himself to his father too much that it drags him down and doesn't live to up to his full power
Older Gohan - "Ultimate Gohan?" soz but i like dbz for ssj not a lame look where they say he is more strong. SSJ was a great unique way to represent power but they get rid of it
The list goes on... but by far goten and kid trunks really annoy the crap out of me. I have to say, despite the plot holes I do not care if GT was not written by akira I still enjoy it a whole lot better then most of the buu saga purely because of kid trunks and kid goten. To top it off they then fuse togehter to make an even bigger prick, Gotenks
